In this work, three design configurations of a sonoreactor are considered under various operating conditions, and the acoustic characteristics during water sonication are investigated while using an immersed-type ultrasonic flat transducer probe in a sonoreactor model. Numerical models are also developed to simulate the sonication process, and they are successfully validated and compared with available data in the literature. Several sets of numerical investigations are conducted using the finite-element method and solved by the computational acoustics module in the COMSOL Multiphysics. The effects of the acoustical and geometrical parameters are investigated, analyzed, and reported, including the ultrasonic frequency, acoustic intensity, and scaling-up the reactor. The present study includes a parametric investigation examining the change of the ultrasonic frequency, intensity, and probe immersion depth on the performance. The results of the parametric study show that the highest cavitation energy corresponds to the maximum magnitude of negative pressure that takes place in the range of 60–80 kHz. The cavitation energy analyses are conducted under the conditions of 20 kHz of frequency and at 36 W input power. It is found that the cavitation energy of 15.87 W could produce 2.98 × 10−10 mol/J of sonochemical efficiency. In addition, the effect of altering the transducer probe depth changes the acoustic pressure field insignificantly. Furthermore, a recommendation is made to improve the sonochemical efficiency by introducing more considerable ultrasound input power while operating the sonoreactor at an ultrasonic frequency lower than 60 kHz. The results presented in this paper provide a comprehensive assessment of different sonoreactors and the feasibility of scaling-up their production rate.  相似文献

The use of ultrasound to enhance the regeneration of zeolite 13X for efficient utilization of thermal energy was investigated as a substitute to conventional heating methods. The effects of ultrasonic power and frequency on the desorption of water from zeolite 13X were analyzed to optimize the desorption efficiency. To determine and justify the effectiveness of incorporating ultrasound from an energy-savings point of view, an approach of constant overall input power of 20 or 25 W was adopted. To measure the extent of the effectiveness of using ultrasound, the ultrasonic-power-to-total power ratios of 0.2, 0.25, 0.4 and 0.5 were investigated and the results compared with those of no-ultrasound (heat only) at the same total power. To analyze the effect of ultrasonic frequency, identical experiments were performed at three nominal ultrasonic frequencies of ~28, 40 and 80 kHz. The experimental results showed that using ultrasound enhances the regeneration of zeolite 13X at all the aforementioned power ratios and frequencies without increasing the total input power. With regard to energy consumption, the highest energy-savings power ratio (0.25) resulted in a 24% reduction in required input energy and with an increase in ultrasonic power, i.e. an increase in acoustic-to-total power ratio, the effectiveness of applying ultrasound decreased drastically. At a power ratio of 0.2, the time required for regeneration was reduced by 23.8% compared to the heat-only process under the same experimental conditions. In terms of ultrasonic frequency, lower frequencies resulted in higher efficiency and energy savings, and it was concluded that the effect of ultrasonic radiation becomes more significant at lower ultrasonic frequencies. The observed inverse proportionality between the frequency and ultrasound-assisted desorption enhancement suggests that acoustic dissipation is not a significant mechanism to enhance mass transfer, but rather other mechanisms must be considered.  相似文献

Ultrasound requires high power and longer treatment times to inactivate microorganisms when compared to ultrasound combined with other technologies. Also, the antimicrobial efficiency of aqueous ozone increases with an increase in its concentration and exposure time, but with a detrimental effect on the quality of the treated food. In this study, the effect of aqueous ozone at low concentration, multi-mode frequency irradiation and their combination on microbial safety and nutritional quality of cherry tomato was investigated. Individual washing with aqueous ozone and mono-mode frequency irradiation resulted in <1 log CFU/g reduction in the spoilage microorganisms, while dual-mode frequency irradiation (DMFI) resulted in higher microbial reduction (1.3–2.6 1 log CFU/g). The combined system (20/40 kHz + aqueous ozone) on the other hand, resulted in >3 log CFU/g microbial reduction. The application of DMFI enhanced the antimicrobial efficiency of aqueous ozone without any detrimental effect on the physicochemical properties (except the firmness), bioactive compounds, and antioxidants of the cherry tomato during 21 days refrigerated storage. The result obtained indicates the promising substitute to the single washing technique for microbial safety as well as preserving the nutritional quality and enhancing the shelf life of cherry tomato.  相似文献

Decontamination of graphite structural elements and recovery of uranium is crucial for waste minimization and recycle of nuclear fuel elements. Feasibility of intensified dissolution of uranium-impregnated graphite substrate using ultrasound has been studied with objective of establishing the effect of operating parameters and the kinetics of sonocatalytic dissolution of uranium in nitric acid. The effect of operating frequency and acoustic intensity as well as the acid concentration and temperature on the dissolution of metal has been elucidated. It was observed that at lower acid concentrations (6 M–8 M), the dissolution ratio increases by 15% on increasing the bath temperature from 45 to 70 °C. At higher acid concentration (>10 M), the increase was only around 5–7% for a similar change in temperature. With 12 M HNO3, pitting was also observed on the graphite surface along with erosion due to high local reaction rates in the presence of ultrasound. For higher frequency of applied ultrasound, lower dissolution rate of uranium was observed though it also leads to high rates of erosion of the substrate. It was thus established that suitable optimization of frequency is required based on the nature of the substrate and the choice of recycling it. The dissolution rate was also demonstrated to increase with acoustic intensity till it reaches to the maximum at the observed optimum (1.2 W/cm2 at 33 kHz). Comparison with silent conditions revealed that enhanced rate was obtained due to the use of ultrasound under optimum conditions. The work has demonstrated the effective application of ultrasound for intensifying the extent of dissolution of metal.  相似文献

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticle has good photo-/sono-catalytic features, the reunion of this particle in solution-phase generally limits the extensive biomedical application. In the present study, the aggregation of TiO2 nanoparticles was alleviated by facile fabrication under different pH conditions. A novel TiO2 nanocomposite was further synthesized by properly conjugation with trace amount of DVDMS sensitizer (named DFT). The characterization, sonoactivity, as well as the antibacterial efficiency were specially evaluated. The results showed that the sonochemical activity of DFT was greatly improved as compared with the simple surface modification of TiO2 (F-TiO2) and free DVDMS, regarding to the hydroxyl radicals and singlet oxygen yields using the same ultrasound exposure. Moreover, ultrasonic stimulation of DFT exhibited excellent bacterial eradication, with up to 92.41% of killing efficiency in S. aureus. The flow cytometry analysis indicated an increased intracellular ROS and membrane disturbance by combination of DFT and ultrasound. The findings suggest that the proper fabrication and DVDMS incorporation greatly improved the sonocatalytic process of TiO2, and the ultrasound based biomedical applications of DFT deserve future deep investigation.  相似文献

Modified pectin (MP) was reported to have increased bioactivities compared with the original one. However, traditional modification methods such as using an acidic solvent with heating are not only costly but causing severe pollution as well. In this study, manothermosonication (MTS) with a continuous-flow system was utilized to modify citrus pectin. The citrus pectin (5 g/L) treated by MTS (3.23 W/mL, 400 kPa, 45 °C) exhibited lower molecular weight (Mw, 248.17 kDa) and PDI (2.76). The pectin treated by MTS (400 KPa, 45 °C, 5 min) exhibited a narrower Mw distribution and lowered more Mw (48.8%) than the ultrasound(US)-treated (23.8%). Pectin degradation data fitted well to kinetic model of 1/Mwt −1/Mw0 = kt (45–65 °C). A lower activation energy of 13.33 kJ/mol was observed in the MTS treatment compared with the US-treated (16.38 kJ/mol). The MTS-treated pectin lowered the degree of methoxylation (DM), mol% of rhamnose and galacturonic acid (GalA) while increased mol% of galactose (Gal), xylose (Xyl), and arabinose (Ara). The 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance showed that MTS could not alter the primary structures of citrus pectin. However, an elevated (Gal + Ara)/Rha and reduced GalA/(Rha + Ara + Gal + Xyl) molar ratios after MTS suggested that MTS resulted in more significant degradation on the main chains and less on the side chains of pectin, in agreement with the result of atomic force microscope. Moreover, the MTS-treated pectin exhibited a higher 1,1-diphenyl-2picryl hydrazyl radical scavenging capacity compared with original pectin.  相似文献

Ultrasonic-assisted electrodeposition was used to fabricate the nickel/graphene oxide composite coatings with high hardness, low friction coefficient, and high wear resistance. In the present study, the effects of ultrasonic power and concentration of graphene oxide on the mechanical and tribological properties of the electrodeposited nickel/graphene oxide composite coatings were systematically studied. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses showed that the crystallite size of the nickel decreased with an increase of ultrasonic power (0–50 W, 40 KHz, square wave) and concentration of graphene oxide (0.1–0.4 g/L). Morphologies of the surface and cross-section of the composite coatings observed by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) confirmed the existence of graphene oxide particles in the nickel matrix. The results from microhardness measurement demonstrated that the hardness was increased by 1.8 times using 50 W ultrasonic-assisted electrodeposition with the fixed concentration of graphene oxide (0.1 g/L), compared to the pure nickel coating. The hardness was increased by 4.4 times for the 0.4 g/L graphene oxide with the optimized ultrasonic power of 50 W in comparison to the pure nickel coating. Meanwhile, the friction coefficient decreased gradually with an increase in ultrasonic power and concentration of graphene oxide, respectively, where the effect of the concentration of graphene oxide played a more important role.  相似文献

An ultrasound standing wave field (SWF) has been utilized in many biomedical applications. Here, we demonstrate how a SWF can enhance drug release using acoustic droplet vaporization (ADV) in an acoustically-responsive scaffold (ARS). ARSs are composite fibrin hydrogels containing payload-carrying, monodispersed perfluorocarbon (PFC) emulsions and have been used to stimulate regenerative processes such as angiogenesis. Elevated amplitudes in the SWF significantly enhanced payload release from ARSs containing dextran-loaded emulsions (nominal diameter: 6 μm) compared to the -SWF condition, both at sub- and suprathreshold excitation pressures. At 2.5 MHz and 4 MPa peak rarefactional pressure, the cumulative percentage of payload released from ARSs reached 84.1 ± 5.4% and 66.1 ± 4.4% under + SWF and -SWF conditions, respectively, on day 10. A strategy for generating a SWF for an in situ ARS is also presented. For dual-payload release studies, bi-layer ARSs containing a different payload within each layer were exposed to temporally staggered ADV at 3.25 MHz (day 0) and 8.6 MHz (day 4). Sequential payload release was demonstrated using dextran payloads as well as two growth factors relevant to angiogenesis: basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) and platelet-derived growth factor BB (PDGF-BB). In addition, bubble growth and fibrin degradation were characterized in the ARSs under +SWF and -SWF conditions. These results highlight the utility of a SWF for modulating single and dual payload release from an ARS and can be used in future therapeutic studies.  相似文献

Traditional preparation of protein particles is usually complex and tedious, which is a major issue in the development of Pickering high internal phase emulsions (HIPEs). In this study, a facile and in-situ method for the preparation of food-grade Pickering HIPEs was developed using ultrasound pre-fractured casein flocs. The ultrasonic-treated casein protein and resulting Pickering HIPEs were characterised using particle size distribution, confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), cryo-SEM, and rheological measurement. The results indicated that pH values of casein and ultrasonic power level were key parameters for casein protein dispersion into nanoparticles to form o/w Pickering HIPEs. In optimal conditions, the hexagons of emulsion droplets were close together, and the emulsions formed with ultrasonic caseins exhibited gel-like behaviour. Additionally, ultrasonic microscale-sized caseins (about 25 μm) disappeared upon the use of high speed homogenisation during the formation of HIPEs, while the chemical distribution revealed by confocal laser scanning microscopy indicated that the dispersive nanoparticles from casein proteins were evidently absorbed on the interface of HIPEs (cryo-SEM). These findings prove that ultrasound is an effective tool to loosen casein flocs to induce the in-situ formation of stabilised Pickering HIPEs. Overall, this work provides a green and facile route to convert edible oil into a soft solid, which has great potential for applications in biomedical materials, 3D printing technology, and various cosmetics.  相似文献

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are hypothesized to play a role in the sonoporation mechanisms. Nevertheless, the acoustical phenomenon behind the ROS production as well as the exact mechanisms of ROS action involved in the increased cell membrane permeability are still not fully understood. Therefore, we investigated the key processes occurring at the molecular level in and around microbubbles subjected to ultrasound using computational chemistry methods. To confirm the molecular simulation predictions, we measured the ROS production by exposing SonoVue® microbubbles (MBs) to ultrasound using biological assays. To investigate the role of ROS in cell membrane permeabilization, cells were subjected to ultrasound in presence of MBs and plasmid encoding reporter gene, and the transfection level was assessed using flow cytometry. The molecular simulations showed that under sonoporation conditions, ROS can form inside the MBs. These radicals could easily diffuse through the MB shell toward the surrounding aqueous phase and participate in the permeabilization of nearby cell membranes. Experimental data confirmed that MBs favor spontaneous formation of a host of free radicals where HO was the main ROS species after US exposure. The presence of ROS scavengers/inhibitors during the sonoporation process decreased both the production of ROS and the subsequent transfection level without significant loss of cell viability. In conclusion, the exposure of MBs to ultrasound might be the origin of chemical effects, which play a role in the cell membrane permeabilization and in the in vitro gene delivery when generated in its proximity.  相似文献
